Hi Denise,
If you'll send me your mailing address, I'll
have the office send you information on our discounted helmet purchasing
program. However, I must warn you, it is difficult to find extra small
helmets. I have been researching this matter and thus far have not
found any resources. I consulted with Holly DeBlois, Rural Youth Safety
Specialist for the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural
Health and Safety. She too is looking into this issue. Right now,
my best guess is that extra small helmets are not made because it
might be inappropriate for extra small children to ride. There is
also an issue about putting the extra weight on a small child's head.
Proportionately, the smaller the child, the heavier their head is
in relation to their body. When you increase the weight of the head
with a helmet, it could put the child at greater risk. Please do not
mistake this information as me saying your child should not wear a
helmet, because I definitely think all children should wear a helmet
each and every time they are mounted on a horse. I am sorry I do not
have more definitive information on this matter but I will continue
to look into it. It is quite possible that your child could fit in
a regularly sized small helmet. My son did at the age of 5. Head size
does not necessarily correlate to body size and age. The schooling
helmets by Lexington are available is sizes as small as 6 ¬¼ and that
is pretty small. I am forwarding this message to Barbara Lee as well
and you may want to contact her for additional information on horses
and children. The
National Children's Center is a valuable resource available to
all of us, you can get lots of safety information from them. Good
luck and let me know if I can answer other questions for you.
